Valerian Formozov

Valerian Formozov (6th of October 1921, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, Russian SFSR –  2004, Moscow, Russian Federation) –  a painter. 

V. Formozov was born in the family of an accountant, a former priest. In 1937-1940 he had been studying at the Gorky Art College. In 1940-1946 Formozov had been serving in the Red Army, he participated in the World War II.  

In 1946 Valerian Formozov enrolled into the department of painting of Latvian State Academy of Arts and graduated in 1952. His final work was the portrait of professor Teodors Zaļkalns, which was later exhibited at the All-Union Exhibition of Final Works (Moscow). In 1953-1955 Valerian Formozov had been working as a teacher and assistant at the department of drawing of Latvian State Academy of Arts and also taught at Riga College of Applied Art.

Since 1964 V. Formozov had been living and working by Moscow and Tver, where he owned a house. He worked in the genres of portrait and landscape. Some of his paintings are dedicated to military themes. He also worked in the style of socialist realism. 

Formozov's works are kept at the Latvian Art Museum and many museums in Russia, as well as in private collections in France, Great Britain, Germany, the USA and Russia. 

In 2004 V. Formozov became a Distinguished Artist of Russian Federation.
