This construction took place in 1961-1966. Nowadays this Plavinas HES is the biggest in   capacity (868,5 mwt) in the Baltics and the second in the European Union.

Photo album of the works of the painter Pyotr Shetokhin

Pyotr Shetokhin was born in Riga in 1930 in the family of the hereditary Riga inhabitants.After the Second World War he graduated from Riga architecture and arts school. Heused to decorate shop windows, simultaneously mastering painting. He is the author ofabout 1000 pictures. Landscapes, still-life and flowers occupy the main place in hiscreative activity.

The Lunsky`s and the Shetokhin`s families belong to the hereditary Riga inhabitants. Vladimir Lunsky was the main province and synodal architect of Lifland. Vladimir Shetokhin was notable for his good voice and maintained an opera studio in Riga in 1920-1930. The Lunskies and the Shetokhins became related to each other in 1916, and as the result of the marriage there appeared two children: Zoya and Petr (see  his photo album).

Photos and documents from the archives of Larisa Chukhina (1913-2002)

Larisa Chukhina (nee Stobuvnik) in 1939 graduated from the philosophical department of   Stefan Batori University in Vilnius, though her scientific career was interrupted by the war. Larisa Chukhina came to Riga in 1948, but for long years she was deprived of working in her speciality. She had to study again for the second time at the Leningrad University (1964). In 1967 she defended her candidate thesis, and in 1985 she defended her doctor thesis. From 1967 she was working in the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the LSSR. From 1981 till her death she was working at the Institute of philosophy and law (from 1991 also at the Institute of philosophy and sociology of the Latvian University).

Arkady Pavlov (1903-1960) was playing in the Latvian national football team from 1924 till 1933, and participated in the Olympic Games in Paris (1924).

The soldier of three armies

The photo album shows the destiny of the Russian inhabitant of Riga Konstantin Lozhenitsin (1908-1944, who served in the Latvian Army, then in the Soviet Army, and ended his life as obersturmfuhrer in the Latvian SS legion.

The story of the Russian girl Elvira Bestugina

The girl was brought to Latvia in 1956 by her parents. She was 15. Herfather was amilitary service man. At the previous living place they had nomusical school, and the girl took lessons in playing the accordion with private teacher.
