Yakov Kulnev
Yakov Kulnev (1763 – 1812), was born in Latvia in the town of Lutsin (Lūdza), Russian commander, Lieutenant-General, hero of the Napoleonic War, in which Kulnev became known as ‘one of the finest generals in the Russian cavalry’. Was distinguished for exceptional bravery. While fearless and ferocious in battle, he was merciful towards the vanquished enemy and civilians. Died 1 August 1812 in a victorious battle with the troops of Marshal Oudinot.
