Arkady Borisov
Arkady Borisov (3rd of February 1938, Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR – 14th of May 2016, Riga, Republic of Latvia) – professor, Habilitated Doctor of computer sciences (Dr. habil. sc. comp.).
Arkady Borisov graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute (now Riga Technical University – RTU) in 1964, and in 1970 he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation. In the same year, he participated in the establishment of the Department of Automated Control Systems (ACS) at RPI and became its first head. Under the leadership of A. Borisov, the department achieved significant success in training specialists in system analysis and in solving problems in the field of information technology, as well as in research work.
In 1986, A. Borisov defended his doctoral dissertation. He was subsequently awarded the academic title of professor in the Department of ACS. He later headed, as director, the Institute of Intelligent Computer Technologies at RTU, and in recent years worked as a professor in the Department of Modelling and Simulation.
Professor Borisov’s range of scientific interests was very broad. He was an outstanding organizer of both research and teaching. Over many years of fruitful work, he established his own scientific school. Among his students are 25 Candidates and Doctors of Sciences and more than 20 Master’s graduates, who work in leading IT companies not only in Latvia but also far beyond its borders.
A. Borisov was a member of several international scientific organizations, as well as a member of the editorial boards of a number of international journals. His numerous scholarly works (10 monographs co-authored with colleagues and over 200 academic articles) are well known among specialists both in Latvia and abroad.
He is remembered for his determination and his ability to inspire colleagues with new ideas. Professor Borisov was interested in jazz and the arts, paying particular attention to the Art Nouveau style in architecture and interior design.
Even the day before his passing, he was discussing with colleagues the tasks and directions of future research work.
