Panorama of Jakobstadt (now Jēkabpils). Painting by O. Hunn. 1820. In 1670 Jakob the Duke of Courland gave by special decree municipal rights to the village on the left bank of the Daugava river, populated mainly by Old Believers. In honour of the Duke the town was named Jakobstadt.
