Bishop Alexander (Matryonin)

Alexander (Matryonin; 6th of September 1973) –  an Archbishop of Daugavpils and Rezekne.

Alexander (secular name Sergey Matryonin), the future bishop of Daugavpils and Rezekne, was born on 6th of September 1973 in Riga.  In 1990s he studied painting and graphics, and was participating in the restoration of Riga All Saints church. In 1991 he became a subdeacon of the Most Eminent Alexander (Kudryashov), who at that time was the bishop of Riga and all Latvia. During the ordination he received the name Alexander.

On 6th of September 1998 he was ordained by the archbishop of Riga and all Latvia Alexander into priesthood.

In 1999 Alexander was tonsured as monk.

In 2001 before Easter he was ordained into Father Superior.

At the beginning of the 21st century Alexander was taking part in the work of different committees, which were dealing with the visits of holy relics and miraculous icons to Riga.

By the Most Holy Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexey II he was awarded the right to wear a decorated cross.

In December of 2005 he was elected secretary of Church Court of Latvian Orthodox Church.

In 2006 Alexander was ordained into archimandrite.

In August 2006 he became the bishop of Daugavpils and vicar of Latvian Orthodox Church.

On 12th of March 2013 by the decision of the Holy Synod he was appointed the Most Holy bishop of Daugavpils and Rezekne.
