Svetlana Andreyeva
Svetlana Andreyeva (4th of September 1936, Gomel Oblast, Belorussian SSR – 3rd of Septemder 2025, Riga, Republic of Latvia) – a doctor, an obstetrician-gynecologist, Doctor of medicine (Dr. med), from 1985 - an assistant professor of gynecology at the Riga Medical Institute, from 1990 to 2015 – at the Latvian Medical Academy\Riga Stradiņš University; Laureate of the State Prize of the Latvian SSR (1989).
Svetlana Andreeva (née Nalegach, until 1962) was born in Belarus. She graduated from Secondary School No. 4 in the town of Rechytsa in 1953 and, in the same year, entered the Riga Medical Institute (RMI), from which she graduated from the Faculty of General Medicine in 1959. Upon graduation, she was assigned to the city of Daugavpils, where her husband, Nikolai Andreev, was already working as a physician. There she worked as a resident doctor at the city maternity hospital from 1959 to 1962.
In 1962, the family moved to Riga, as Nikolai Andreev had been invited to work at the Riga Medical Institute and was engaged in scientific research. In Riga, S. Andreeva worked as a clinical resident at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of RMI (1962–1964), and as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the P. Stradiņš Republican Clinical Hospital (1964–1967). From 1967 to 1971, she had been a postgraduate student at the Faculty of General Medicine of RMI. After completing her postgraduate studies, she defended her Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertation on “The Role of Cocarboxylase in the Prevention and Treatment of Fetal and Neonatal Asphyxia” (1971). In 1992, her dissertation was nostrified, and Svetlana Andreeva was awarded the degree of Dr. med. in accordance with the academic degree system of the Republic of Latvia.
In 1976, S. Andreeva was elected to the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in 1985 — to the position of Associate Professor, a post she held until 2015. She completed advanced training courses at the I. Sechenov First Moscow Medical Institute (1976) and at the Leningrad Sanitary and Hygienic Institute (1985), where she trained in medical university pedagogy.
Svetlana Andreeva’s scientific interests in obstetrics and gynecology were centered on issues of childbirth assistance, surgical treatment, emergency care in rural areas, and the implementation of modern therapeutic methods in Latvian obstetric and gynecological practice.
She is the author and co-author of more than 70 scientific articles, and has presented papers at conferences in Latvia and abroad. For her co-authorship in the first Latvian-language teaching manuals on obstetrics (published in 1982 and 1987), she was awarded the State Prize of the Latvian SSR (1989). S. Andreeva supervised clinical residents and students in both academic and research work. For 15 years, she led the student scientific circle at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where students eager to go beyond the curriculum gained additional clinical experience and got engaged in research. S. Andreeva has been an active member of the Latvian Scientific Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
For her special services to Latvia, S. Andreeva was granted citizenship of the Republic of Latvia in 1998. She was also awarded the title of Emeritus Scientist of the Republic of Latvia (2008).
Her husband, Nikolai Andreev (1930–2002), was a cardiologist, professor, founder and director of the Latvian Research Institute of Cardiology (1977–1990), Honored Doctor of the Latvian SSR (1980), and Laureate of the State Prize of the Latvian SSR (1982).
She authored the book “Nikolai Andreev. The Life Journey” (2019), dedicated to her husband’s life and professional path.
Both daughters followed in their parents’ footsteps:
– Tatjana Andreeva (b. 1960) – cardiologist, graduate of the Riga Medical Institute, Dr. med., works in the Cardiology Department of the P. Stradiņš Republican Clinical Hospital;
– Elena Andreeva (b. 1966) – endocrinologist, Dr. habil. med., professor, based in Moscow.
