Nikolay Vasilyev
Nikolay Vasilyev (1891, Riga, Russian Empire – 1961, Riga, Latvian SSR) – opera singer (tenor) producer and teacher.
Nikolay Vasilyev studied in Riga church school, then in Holy seminary, where he demonstrated his flair for music, sang in church choir and played in the orchestra of folk instruments. After studies N. Vasilyev went to Petersburg and entered the University, faculty of law.
During the 1-st World War he served in the Army and was heavily wounded.
Intending to continue his education N. Vasilyev studied history and philology at Petrograd University but following his interest for music also studied vocal at Petrograd Conservatory from 1918 to 1923.
After graduation he took decision to return to Latvia and became a soloist in the National Opera of Latvia where he performed classical opera parties. In 1936 he took up producing activities in Riga and Liepaja.
He produced and staged almost 30 operas in Latvia.
In addition N. Vasilyev expressed himself as dedicated teacher of Latvian State Conservatory.
