Oleg Anfimov

Oleg Anfimov (19th of February 1937, Shakhty, Russian SFSR – 9th of July 2019, Moscow, RF)  – from 1981 to 1983 the general director of the Riga Electromechanical Plant. The minister of the electrical engineering industry of the USSR from 1989 to 1991.

The future minister was born in the town of Shakhty (at the time part of the Azov–Black Sea Krai, now the Rostov Region of the Russian Federation) into the family of an employee. He graduated from a technical college in Novocherkassk.

Beginning in 1956, O. Anfimov worked for many decades in Riga at the Riga Electromechanical Plant (RĒZ). While employed, he obtained a higher education without taking leave from work, completing his studies at the Riga Polytechnic Institute with a degree in electromechanical engineering. Later, also without interrupting his professional activity, he graduated from the Leningrad Engineering and Economics Institute.

At RĒZ, O. Anfimov worked as a fitter, then became a shop foreman, and quite rapidly (in 1959) rose to the position of deputy shop manager. In 1964 he became chairman of the plant’s trade union committee, and from 1972 to 1978 he had been serving as deputy director of the enterprise. In 1978 he was appointed director of the Riga Experimental Plant of Mechanization Equipment. From 1981 to 1983 Anfimov had been serving as the general director of the RĒZ production association. Under his leadership, the association exceeded its annual plan for 1981–1982 and earned commendations. Several years after Anfimov left for a higher position, the association began to lose ground.

From 1983 to 1986, O. Anfimov worked in the Party apparatus: he served as Second Secretary of the Riga City Committee of the Communist Party and as Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia. In July 1986 he was appointed Minister of the electrical engineering industry of the USSR. From 1989 to 1991 he had been serving as Minister of the Electrical Engineering and Instrument-Making Industry.

From 1986 to 1989, O. Anfimov had been a deputy of the USSR Supreme Soviet.

In November 1991 he became President of the Inter-Republican Electrical Engineering and Instrument-Making Corporation, and later a member of the Coordinating Council of the Russian Union of Mechanical Engineers. Until his passing he served on the advisory council of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

Oleg Anfimov passed away on 9 July 2019.
